Daniyal Triumphs at the Steve Thomas Tournament

On a special day of competition at Barnet Table Tennis Club, 10-year-old Daniyal from Stanmore Table Tennis Club delivered yet another stunning performance—this time at the Steve Thomas Tournament, named in memory of the late Steve Thomas and organised by Barnet coaches Tommy and Lucas.

Daniyal was placed in a challenging group of seven players, with each match played best of five. What followed was a remarkable display of skill, determination, and composure as he battled his way to the gold medal and the tournament title.

Group Stage Dominance

Daniyal began in commanding style, dispatching his first three opponents without dropping a set:

  • Arjun Shah (11–3, 11–2, 11–4)
  • Rohan Shiva (11–6, 11–7, 11–6)
  • William Howson (11–4, 11–6, 11–4)

His fourth match provided the sternest test of the group stage, against Rahill Panchmatia. The two pushed each other to the limit in a thrilling five-set battle. With the match tied and Rahill leading 6–4 and then 7–5 in the decider, Daniyal’s grit shone through once more. He rallied with steely determination to clinch the game 11–7 and the match overall: 11–4, 9–11, 11–5, 9–11, 11–7.

Re-energised, Daniyal went on to secure straight-set wins over Ethan (11–2, 11–7, 11–3) and then against the top seed Louis Parnes, a Master Class player at Barnet TTC, producing a statement performance: 11–2, 11–6, 11–1. With six wins from six, Daniyal topped the group and advanced confidently to the knockout rounds.

Knockout Stage Brilliance

In the quarter-final, Daniyal faced James Kats and once again delivered a clinical display to win 3–0. That victory set up a semi-final showdown against Callum Campbell, the number two seed and another Master Class player. Daniyal rose to the occasion, producing yet another straight-sets victory to reach the final.

The final brought a rematch with top seed Louis Parnes. Having already beaten him in the group, Daniyal knew he faced a tough challenge—but he played with the same fearlessness and composure, prevailing 11–4, 11–3, 11–9 to seal the title in style.

A Golden Victory

Daniyal’s efforts were rewarded with the champion’s gold medal and a £30 cash prize. Across the entire tournament, he dropped only two sets—an incredible feat given the strength of the competition and the calibre of the players he faced.

This victory is yet another shining moment in Daniyal’s young career, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure, his unshakable determination, and his growing reputation as one of the most exciting prospects at Stanmore Table Tennis Club.

Congratulations to Daniyal on a truly unbelievable win—a performance that once again makes the whole club proud.

Joel from Stanmore Table Tennis club has been delivering regular coaching at Park High School and this has led to a number of students from Park High being involved with the club. They have absolutely loved it. Their passion for the sport has grown and they have dedicated any spare time they have to practicing the skills and techniques they have been taught. They proudly represent their school and their club. This experience has truly given them a gift that will stay with them well beyond their school years. It has been a pleasure to witness the impact that Joel and Stanmore has had on those students who have become involved with the club.

We’ve had a fantastic experience at Stanmore Tennis Club. The facilities are excellent, and the environment is welcoming and well-run. Coach Joel has not only helped my son improve his skills, technique, and confidence—he’s truly fuelled his passion for table tennis. Joel is patient, encouraging, and brings out the best in young players. A mention also to Barry, who keeps everything running smoothly. My son looks forward to every session. Highly recommend this club for anyone looking for quality coaching and a supportive atmosphere.

Our son (now 12 years of age) has been going for just under a year and half to this club after coming from another where he was not really progressing. Joel, Barry, Joel’s son have been fantastic and committed to making sure everyone is reaching their potential and thus our sons game has improved significantly in a short space of time and is taking part in a lot more competitions and achieving results. We cannot be more delighted with the club. V. Desai

Under Barry’s leadership and Joel’s coaching he now represents the club at national tournaments which has been amazing to see. It is great to see all ages mixing at the club playing together, there is a real family feel to the club and it has become his second home!

Truly grateful for the positive impact Joel’s TT coaching has had on our child through the club. The sessions have been both engaging and skill-building, offering a fun and supportive environment for development—not just in sports, but in confidence, teamwork, and discipline. The club has a profoundly valuable impact on nurturing local children and providing a safe, enriching space for them to grow and thrive. The activity has become an important and confidence-boosting part of our child’s routine. It is an invaluable asset to the wider community, and we sincerely hope it continues to help children develop the skills they aim for. Thanks to your dedication and professionalism, we fully support your efforts and hope many more young people get the chance to benefit from this incredible program.
